  • Enshittification is a feature documentary about the steady degradation of the internet – and the human cost of platforms that have turned against the people who made them thrive. At the heart of Enshittification is a deceptively simple question: what happened to the internet we were promised?

The film builds on our shared, everyday experience: social media that feels abusive, digital marketplaces that exploit creators and workers, and online spaces that seem to worsen the longer we use them.

  • The film is led by creative team Emily James and Kurt Engfehr. Between them they bring decades of experience making ambitious, idea-driven documentaries that combine intellectual rigour with strong emotional storytelling.

Emily is widely recognised as an innovative documentary storyteller, with a particular gift for translating complex, abstract, or systemic ideas into work that is clear, engaging, and entertaining for broad audiences.

Kurt is one of the most respected documentary editors and producers working today, known for shaping complex material into powerful, coherent narratives, and his work has received significant industry recognition, including an Emmy and multiple major awards.

Eve Marson joins Emily and Kurt as an experienced producer in her own right whose work spans high-profile, internationally recognised documentaries, bringing deep editorial judgement, development strength, and strategic producing expertise to the project.

  • Enshittification is currently in its first phase of production, filming to capture the key events of the book's release, and the remarkable press and attention that it is getting. Capturing this material has been made possible through the generous participation of local camera and sound crews working on deferred-payment agreements, united by a shared belief in the film’s mission and social impact.

Working with animator Harrold Moss, we are developing and building out the animation, graphics, and staged sequences to pair with the film. There is a graphic novel adaptation of the book already in production (commissioned from artist Koren Shadmi).
