"Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers: finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die."

Synopsis

Ever get that feeling that the apps are out to get you? Nothing seems to work as it should? It’s not just you. The internet and on-line services are getting worse, fast.

When just ordering a pizza online, or getting to a meeting on time turns into an existential nightmare, you've entered the enshittocene.

Cory Doctorow, NY Times best-selling author, co-founder of the UK Open Rights Group and special advisor to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, coined the term ‘enshittification’ in a series of posts to his daily blog (pluralistic.net), and it took the internet by storm leading him to write his latest book, out this October, Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse And What To Do About It. The American Dialect Society named it their word of the year in 2023, Merriam Webster’s Dictionary added it to their canon in 2024, and millions of people have now used it to describe the inescapable online dumpster fire that is our modern society.

But all is not lost! Cory tells us that to halt the internet’s enshittification and stuff that shit back where it belongs, we need to restore the four forces that discipline technology firms, pressuring them to treat us well and tossing the products and services that fail to do so on the scrapheap of history. This may be a shitty story, but it doesn’t have to have a crappy ending. Enshittification is the word that best sums up our era.

And this film will sum up that word.
